Small Business Health Plans Urged on By Retailers
I consider myself a great employer. Yet I can’t wholeheartedly say that when in reality I cannot afford to provide my employees with affordable health insurance. I have known of independent retailers who circumvent the problem of no employee health plan by paying higher wages in hopes that the employee will seek their own health insurance. But this is not what I consider to be a viable solution. And until I can provide my employees with a plan, I cannot feel like a complete success. The National Retail Federation has been lobbying the Senate for legislature that would help small employers meet rising health insurance costs by authorizing the creation of Small Business Health Plans. This would allow small retailers to band together to form legitimate associations and purchase affordable health benefits.
It will be interesting to see if this will pass. If it does come to fruition, then the next step is to band together in groups to qualify for umbrella policies.
