Sex and the Indie Retailer
I have been thinking a lot about sex lately.
As I work my way around on focusing on my business, The Zen Merchant, I keep thinking of what topics get all the media attention.
Health, Money, and Sex.
Now being rather zen-minded, wanting to focus on positive living, living in the moment and bringing anti-stress items in my shop, I thought that what is more of a release for stress than a good old orgasm.
Before you think that I am thinking of turning my shop into a brothel. (Believe me, just the cost of all that velvet and satin would put me over budget.) I began thinking about my sense of empowerment as woman. Even though I was raised in a Mexican Catholic home, my family encouraged my intellectual curiosity and reminded me of the power of a woman’s sexuality.
Lately, I guess it just blows me away that there are so many women out there who know so little about how their body works. Interest in sex is still viewed by many as obscene, exploitative, and sinful. Why not offer quality products in a tasteful atmosphere? I mean, glass or crystal dildos are really pretty.
Now if a lady wants to buy a little Kama Sutra lotion for that trip to Maui for a second honeymoon, she can feel a little lost. There are few places where a woman can walk in and buy marital aids without having to deal with male-oriented, sometimes demeaning products. “Oh…, uh…, no thanks. I won’t need a strap-on today. Bubba’s a little jumpy about that still… since the ‘accident’.”
Sex sells. I know. But with this impersonal cyber world, I feel as if I have found my calling in some crazy way. To all my women friends I ask, “How do you expect someone to please you if you can’t please yourself.” I’ll keep you guys posted!
